A GenZ Silicon Valley Startup Dream Forged in Failure: NTHU Alum Founded GitRoll to Disrupt Global Engineer Recruitment

"Not every engineer has a brand name school background or pedigree, but truly skilled developers, aka builders, should not be overlooked." This profound realization came to Ray Kuo, an alumnus of National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) Experimental Education Program, on his entrepreneurial journey.

After graduation, he embarked on a path of international entrepreneurship, and despite a series of setbacks in Hong Kong and Taiwan, he chose not to give up. He ultimately founded GitRoll, an AI startup that successfully raised NT$25 million and is now leading its team into the heart of Silicon Valley.

Upon graduating from university, Ray pursued further studies in Hong Kong and began his first startup venture. He and his team initially created Metamory, a blockchain-based mourning platform for deceased pets, but the company eventually dissolved after failing to gain market traction. During that period, he experienced a profound low, including the CEO's attempted suicide, which left him physically and mentally exhausted. However, this did not stop him. Instead, it prompted him to reconsider: "Why do our products always get stuck? Why do we always hire the wrong people to deliver?" These reflections eventually crystallized into a new business idea—to build a truly merit-based talent platform.

In 2024, he co-founded GitRoll with a team of young developers from the U.S., Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Canada. The company is dedicated to establishing an objective and fair evaluation system for engineers. Its platform uses a proprietary AI model to analyze over 150 million developers' open-source code on GitHub. It evaluates developers' abilities across 6 key technical dimensions—3 hard skills, 2 soft skills, and builder mindset—and generates a hexagonal radar chart. With GitRoll's proprietary AI Agent and talent search features, the platform helps companies streamline effectively to source, vet, and recruit truly talented engineers.

Within 3 months of its launch, GitRoll achieved million-dollar revenue and was selected to join the renowned U.S. accelerator, Draper University, with a full scholarship from the Taiwanese government for a three-month entrepreneurial training program in Silicon Valley. In the meantime, the team successfully completed a NT$25 million Pre-Seed round. Its user base has grown to over 5 million people across more than 180 countries.

In the first half of 2025 alone, the company has secured nearly NT$20 million in contract orders and revenue. Apple, AMD, and Shopify are among the platform's early adopters, demonstrating its significant market potential and application value. GitRoll is currently raising its next round of NT$100 million, with plans to expand its operations from Silicon Valley to the U.S. East Coast and Asia.
Reflecting on his time in collegiate Experimental Education Program, Ray noted that its free, diverse curriculum and open, inclusive environment allowed him to engage in cross-disciplinary learning and self-exploration. This experience laid the foundation for the broad perspective and solid capabilities he would later need as an entrepreneur.

Ray expressed his gratitude: "I am deeply thankful for the education I received at NTHU undergraduate program.
It's where I learned how to chase my dreams, how to face uncertainty, and how to get back up after a fall. I sincerely appreciate my co-founders, Charles Fu, Jovy Yu, Luyi Yan, and Ryan Leung. In the future, I hope to ensure that more hidden gems are not overlooked or undervalued because of their resumes or geographical location, and that the world sees the perseverance and innovation of Taiwan's Gen Z entrepreneurs."
